Korea is the 4th largest trading partner in Vietnam (7th in exports, 3rd in imports). However, most of Vietnam producers are suffering from poverty. This is caused by their severely low income due to unfair trading practices. Asia Fairtrade Network has been trading with Vietnamese fair trade organizations to import and sell their cashew nuts and more. From purchasing these fair trade products, you can experience high quality Vietnamese products and also contribute to fair and sustainable trade with Vietnamese farmers.

The organic cinnamon of the Asian Fairtrade Network is from fair trade cinnamon grown by natural farming methods of ethnic minority villages in Vietnam. Tran Yen Bio Farmers Club is a cooperative of ethnic minorities who come from ancestral generations in the mountainous countryside of Yen Bai province. For the longest time, Zao people have grown cinnamon through natural farming which does not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Through the benefits of fair trade, they were able to change the dumpy dirty roads into pavement roads and also build a school. The bridge that used to break on rainy seasons was replaced with a strong bridge that connects the village. The profits made from selling organic cinnamon support the independence of the minority communities and their financial foundation. Their cinnamon from the famous Yen Bai region of Vietnam is very sweet and its rich and refreshing flavor makes it the benchmark for cinnamon quality.

Pride of an organic cinnamon farmer
For the family of Tran Quang Khai, who belongs to Viet clan who has been growing cinnamon for more than 10 years, cinnamon plays very important role in their livelihood. 1.5 out of 2 hectares of land that the family owns is used for growing cinnamon. As such, cinnamon accounts for 90% of the total household income.Removing weeds is very important in growing cinnamon. In particular, if sampling has been transplanted or in the case of young tree, weeds must be removed thoroughly in order for them to grow well. Removing weeds in rugged cinnamon farms during sweltering hot weather with high humidity is not an easy task. Nonetheless, the local residents are nurturing their dreams for brighter future since they can sell cinnamon they harvested at higher price through the Vina Samex factory built in the Yen Bai region. For the family of Tran Quang Khai, who belongs to Viet clan who has been growing cinnamon for more than 10 years, cinnamon plays very important role in their livelihood. 1.5 out of 2 hectares of land that the family owns is used for growing cinnamon.
